Scientist and entrepreneur, Dr Graeme Malcolm OBE is CEO and founder of M Squared. Founded in 2006, M Squared is now one of the UK's most innovative, disruptive technology businesses.
Graeme’s interest in laser technology began at Strathclyde University with a degree in Laser Physics and Optoelectronics followed by PhD research into Compact Solid-State Lasers. He went on to co-found university spin out Microlase Optical Systems in 1992, which was later bought by the global laser company, Coherent, in 1999. Graeme continued to lead the newly formed Coherent Scotland until 2005.
Graeme is focussed on finding technological and entrepreneurial solutions to some of society's critical problems.
At M Squared, Graeme oversees the development of a range of world-class laser, quantum and other photonics systems that are critical enablers in fundamental physics research and underpin many world-firsts. He is also focussed on finding technological and entrepreneurial solutions to some of society's critical problems, such as Quantum Sensing to enable new forms of detection, Quantum Computing to help solve society’s data computation problems, through to remote sensing for security and counter-terrorism, photonics to diagnose and treat degenerative brain disease, systems to monitor climate change and food production, as well as finding new ways to enhance life sciences imaging through microscopy.
Passionate about using science and technology to make a real difference to the world, Graeme devotes himself to the support and encouragement of the UK's scientific base. Graeme is Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Fellow of The Royal Society Edinburgh, Fellow of the Institute of Physics and visiting Professor and Entrepreneur in Residence at the Institute of Photonics at the University of Strathclyde.
Graeme has championed several high-profile technology enterprises, working alongside government and industry to drive progress in the field. His work with UK quantum initiatives has, for example, yielded key developments in quantum clocks, quantum sensors and quantum computing systems for industrial applications. For his expertise, Graeme is regularly invited to provide expert evidence on quantum to the Commons' Select Committee on Science and Technology.
Graeme's achievements are widely recognised. He was awarded an OBE from Her Majesty the Queen for his services to Science and Innovation in the 2015 New Year Honours list and The Swan Medal from the Institute of Physics. He was also Innovation Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2017 Great British Entrepreneur of the Year Awards and Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2018 Amazon Growing Business Awards. He has authored and co-authored over eighty papers and conference proceedings and has secured well over 400 patents worldwide and won the Innovation Award in The LDC Top 50 Most Ambitious Business Leaders programme for 2020.
