M Squared receives Queen’s Award for Enterprise for second consecutive year

M Squared has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (International Trade) today, HM the Queen’s birthday. The award follows pivotal technological breakthroughs in past year

21 APRIL, LONDON: M Squared, the leading manufacturer of photonics and quantum technologies, has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (International Trade) today, HM the Queen’s birthday.

Along with other awardees, M Squared has demonstrated outstanding results in the field of international trade, serving as an inspiration to others, according to today’s public announcement by Buckingham Palace.

In its latest figures, M Squared has increased its exports by more than 300% per cent in the past three years and these now account for around 90% of revenue. As its international footing has strengthened, the company has achieved annual sales turnover of over £13 million.

From the UK, M Squared exports its laser and photonics instruments – including the award-winning continuous wave, narrow-linewidth SolsTiS platform – to a number of overseas markets, in particular the USA. M Squared also works collaboratively through its Innovation Group with a number of research institutions globally.

M Squared’s lasers and photonics instruments are used by researchers, including Nobel Prize-winning scientists, at numerous world leading research institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the Joint Quantum Institute, the University of Tokyo, and in the UK the National Physical Laboratory, the University of St Andrew’s, the UK’s Quantum Technology Hubs and many more.

Most recently, M Squared developed the UK’s first commercial ‘portable’ atom interferometer, in partnership with the UK National Quantum Technology Hub at Birmingham University, a device set to revolutionise medical imaging and brain diagnostics, locating pipes and detecting leaks, archaeological surveying, navigation, assessing rail tracks, network timing, detecting sinkholes and groundwater and space missions.

Dr Graeme Malcolm OBE is CEO and Co-Founder of M Squared and a member of the European Commission’s Quantum Technology Flagship Expert Group.

Graeme commented:

“This award is a privilege for M Squared. Working with international collaborators and world-leading scientific experts brings real joy to our team. We are very proud to be an enabling force in a number of global initiatives to understand the world better, and privileged to work with some of the world’s most ground-breaking scientists.

“Constantly pushing the boundaries of photonics, exporting our technology and working to the highest standards has allowed us to bring new ideas back to the UK, making this a pivotal time for UK quantum technologies in particular. For example, the establishment of the UK Quantum Technology Hubs was part of a successful campaign, which we strongly supported. The UK is capable of being a world-leader in quantum technologies, and the team at M Squared wants to lead that charge.”

This is the second Queen’s Award for Enterprise for the Glasgow-based business following an award in the Innovation category in 2016.

M Squared has secured more than 220 patents since the company was founded in 2006 and earlier this year, M Squared took the top spot on the Metis Partners’ IP100 League table.
